SPORT:Sligo Grammar were crowned SUBWAY Schools All Ireland Under 16 C Boys champions this afternoon with a 50-43 point win over St Munchin's College of Limerick at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

St Munchin's were led by the in-form Reece Barry from and Josh Callanan, both Limerick Lions Basketball and despite a late comeback in the fourth quarter, just couldn't close the gap enough to catch Sligo.

Everyone at LCCR would like to wish the Munchin's players a huge well done for reaching the final.

SPORT:The Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup Semi-Finals take place this weekend with a thrilling match between Mary I and LIT. at 3pm in Dangan, Galway

This will be a derby match packed with tasty battles means an intriguing fixture awaits to determine who represents Limerick in the decider.

Davy Fitzgerald's work with LIT is worthy of the utmost respect.
LIT produced when it truly mattered against UCD in the Quarter-Finals earning a deserved 1-20 to 1-13 win.

Galway's Paul Killeen was influential, while the proimising Jason McCarthy also registered 1-3.

Diarmuid Byrnes is an emerging hurler with Limerick, who is a vital member of an LIT side that also includes David Reidy, Peter Duggan, and Jamie Shanahan (Clare) and Shane Bennett (Waterford).

Holders Mary I, under the stewardship of Jamie Wall, have enjoyed a string of good victories.

Aaron Gillane has been in exceptional scoring form hitting 2-10 against NUIG and 3-9 in the triumph over DIT.

Richie English and Cian Lynch (Limerick), Ronan Maher (Tipperary) and Colm Galvin (Clare) are established inter-county hurlers involved for Mary I.

NEWS:Dolores McNamara has been outbid for the Childers Road Retail Park. The Euromillions jackpot winner from Garryowen lost out to Irish Life, who secured the purchase of the park for just under €46 million.

Ms. McNamara last week, seeking the advice of Eddie Hobbs put in a bid above the €44 million list price for the park and had she won, would have been collecting over €3 million per year in rent from its tenants, which include Dunnes Stores, Maplin, and KFC.

NEWS:A SECOND emergency incident occured at the River Shannon in Limerick this afternoon just after 4pm, when a woman in her early 20s was seen entering the water at Shannon Banks on the outskirts of the city.

Four members of the public, including two kayakers on the water, came to the aid and rescue of the woman.

NEWS:The body of a young woman aged in her late 30s or early 40s has been recovered from the River Shannon this Saturday afternoon in Limerick after a member of the public spotted her in the water.

NEWS:The body of a man has been recovered from the River Shannon during today's search for the 39-year-old seen entering the water early this morning.

The remains of have been brought to the University Hospital Limerick for post-mortem examination and formal identification.

NEWS:The River Shannon is being searched again this morning after a male in his early 30's was seen entering the water at Thomond Bridge shortly after 1:45am.
NEWS:No explosive device was found on the Turkish Airlines' flight which was diverted to Shannon Airport on Sunday morning, according to a spokesman for the airline.

The plane was en-route to Istanbul from Houston, and was diverted to Shannon when a piece of paper with "bomb" written on it was discovered in the toilet.

The aircraft has since departed and has landed safely in Istanbul.

SPORT:Munster have finished their European Champions Cup campaign with a flourish in a bonus-point 28-5 triumph at Benetton Treviso.

Early tries from O'Mahony & Kilcoyne looked to have seen-off the Italian challenge but Treviso got back in it thanks to a drive-over try from Marco Lazzaroni just before half-time.

Murray & O'Mahony ran over during the second half to seal the bonus point and a comfortable win for Anthony Foley's side.

With Stade Francais' overcoming table-toppers Leicester, today's results saw Munster finishing third, with Treviso propping up Pool 4.

NEWS:Turkish Airlines' Flight TK34, which was en-route from Houston Texas to Istanbul, has been forced to divert to Shannon. Gardai have confirmed that a security issue has occurred.

Reports suggest that the plane, which was carrying 217 passengers, dumped fuel off the coast of Kerry before landing at Shannon at approximately 10am this morning.

NEWS:The Dublin-bound carriageway of the M7 motorway between junction 29 Ballysimon and junction 28 Castletroy is closed following a single-vehicle crash this Tuesday morning.

Gardai, Emergency services and crews from Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene shortly after 10:15am.

One male occupant of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and the road remains closed as Gardai are currently investigating.

NEWS:Gardaí­ are seeking the public's assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 37-year-old Ross Minihan missing from his home at Rathbane, Limerick City since December 17, 2015.

Ross was last seen in Rathbane, Limerick at approximately 10pm on December 17 2015.

Ross is described as being 5'7" in height, of medium build with short brown hair, beard and moustache.

It is believed that Ross may have been wearing a black Newcastle United jacket with pink trim, brown corduroy trousers and brown shoes when last seen.

NEWS:Davidson County Assistant District Attorney Greg Brown has confirmed that the grand jury has indicted Molly Martens Corbett, 31, and her father Thomas Michael Martens, 65, with second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

They are accused of killing 39-year-old Jason Paul Corbett.

Court dates have not yet been set.

NEWS:A man has been rescued from a house fire on Alphonsus St after he was found unconscious shortly after 3am this Saturday.

Four units of Limerick City & County Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene, where they discovered the man unconscious in an upstairs bedroom.

The man has been taken to University Hospital.

His dog, which was also rescued - was unharmed.

The fire broke out around 3.30am at the house on St. Munchin's Street, St Mary's Park.

According to a source, lighter fluid - possibly petrol - was "poured on the back door".

COMMUNITY:This group will be on Bedford Row, Limerick on Christmas Day from 12.30 to 2pm, supplying dinners and desserts for the homeless.


NEWS:Limerick City and County Council is urging the public to exercise caution in the vicinity of waterways during the Christmas period due to forecasts of heavy rain and higher than average tides.

A series of high tides is expected twice daily from December 24th to 28th on the Shannon Estuary, and Met Éireann is also warning of higher than average rainfall for the coming week.

NEWS:Limerick City Community Radio announced today that it has been awarded a second one hundred day licence to broadcast. The station - operating from Tait House in Southhill - broadcasts under licence from the BAI every weekend.

COMMUNITY:Limerick on Ice is running a closed session dedicated to children with disabilities and special needs on Sunday December 13th from 12 noon to 1pm.

This will give children who wouldn't normally get the opportunity to go on the ice with some time to experience ice skating.

The session - which will be closed to the general public - is totally free of charge and is limited to 100 children, so booking is essential.

NEWS:Limerick City and County Council says it has been informed by the ESB of plans for further significant releases of water from Parteen Weir.

The Council says the volume of water planned for release is at a level which is likely to cause flooding of roads and could also potentially affect property in flood-prone locations. The areas most at risk of experiencing flooding are Montpelier, Castleconnell and the Mountshannon Road, Lisnagry.

The Council is liaising with householders in these areas that were affected by the 2009 flood and is putting additional measures in place to help alleviate the effects of flooding.

At this time, there is no expectation of flooding in Limerick City but the Council is monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis.

A Simon Zebo try on the hour was the match-winner, but not before Dan Tuohy's 68th-minute score set up a hugely tense finish and ultimately earned Ulster two bonus points.

SPORT:Limerick come away from The Showgrounds with a 3-2 victory over Sligo, while Drogheda go down 5-3 to Shamrock Rovers.

COMMUNITY:The Marie Keating Foundation will hold a free breast cancer seminar in the Strand Hotel, Limerick, on Tuesday, 20 October 2015 for women affected by breast cancer and their loved ones.

The event will take place from 6pm to 8.30pm and include an overview of breast cancer, given by Professor Ranjish Gupta, Consultant Oncologist, Regional Hospital, a talk by Mags Sullivan, a breast cancer nurse, and a breast cancer survivor will tell her story.

The seminar will also include a session on mindfulness given by a local complementary therapist.

NEWS:Gardaí­ are making a further appeal for information about a missing teenager in Limerick.

15-year-old Adam Dunne was last seen at 7pm on Monday the 5th of October in the Roxboro Road/ Mulgrave Street area.
Gardaí say they are 'very concerned' for his wellbeing.

He is described as being 5 foot 9 inches tall, of slim build with light brown hair and blue/ green eyes.

When last seen he was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and hoodie, a navy t-shirt with a grey collar and black runners.

NEWS:Gardaí in Limerick have issued a public appeal to help trace the whereabouts of teenager missing in the city since this Monday.

15-year-old Adam Dunne was last seen on Lower Gerald Griffin Street on Monday, August 24th at around 3pm.

Adam is described as 5'9" tall with blue-green eyes and light brown hair, and was last seen wearing a grey Nike hoody, grey tracksuit bottoms and black Nike runners.

While there is a possibility that he may have travelled to Dublin or another county, this has yet to be verified.

Anyone with any information as to the whereabouts of the young Limerick teenager is asked to contact the Gardai at Roxboro Road Station on 061 214340 or any Garda Station. The confidential telephone line is also open on 1800 666 111.

NEWS:An emergency operation is underway on the River Shannon tonight after a man reportedly entered the water near Clonlara, Co Clare.
